A Pinched Nerve is a Pain in the Neck

Written By Gulf Coast Injury Center on September 12, 2019

Man with muscle spasmsDid you know that a pinched nerve is often a direct precursor to muscle spasms in the neck and upper back? Known as “peripheral nerve” pain, this issue is as common as it is caustic – and Gulf Coast Injury Center is standing by to offer quick and thorough treatment for this debilitating condition.

What is a pinched nerve?

The term “pinched nerve” is often used to describe any acute, stabbing pain in the neck, mid- or lower back. However, what exactly is a “pinched nerve?” Think of peripheral nerves as akin to a basic garden hose, with the tubal area carrying vital spinal fluid encapsulated by the outer sheath, which carries electric current from the brain to the relevant organ systems.

When one of the tubes deviates from its intended placement, causing constriction and reduced flow of spinal fluid and electric current, the result is often unrelenting pain and discomfort – and the resulting diagnosis of a “pinched nerve” and the commonly associated diagnosis of muscle spasms.

How a chiropractor can help

Is it possible to treat pain this severe with chiropractic care? Absolutely. In fact, Gulf Coast Injury Center regularly works with pinched nerve sufferers, and can provide several helpful treatments, including any combination of the following:

  • Rest accompanied by rotational heat/ice treatment

  • Stretching and daily exercises

  • Routine chiropractic care and adjustment

  • Physical therapy

  • Pain management

In many cases, the pain associated with muscle spasms secondary to a herniated disc can be mitigated or resolved with regular visits to an experienced and trusted chiropractor.
