Sciatic nerve pain is one of the most common complaints we hear from our patients at the Gulf Coast Injury Center in Tampa, Florida. We want to help you treat your sciatica through all-natural chiropractic methods. To start with, here are a few of the most frequently asked questions we want to answer regarding this nerve condition.

What is Sciatica?

Sciatica is a form of nerve pain that is caused when the sciatic nerve is pinched. This happens when the surrounding muscle tissue or fat cells are pressing against the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve runs up both legs all the way to the lower back in the buttocks. You can have sciatica in one leg or the other; most people do not have sciatic nerve pain in both legs at the same time.

What are the Symptoms of Sciatica?

The most common symptom of sciatica is a pinching and burning pain in the exact area where the nerve is being pressed against. You may also have muscle weakness in the leg that is being affected. Some people report numbness or tingling in the leg. This is caused when the nerve is pressed closed, which limits the amount of communication traveling from the nerve cells in the leg up to the brain. You may also have trouble sitting, standing, or walking for long periods due to this numbness and pain.

How Does a Chiropractor Treat and Help Manage Sciatica?

Typically, sciatica can be effectively resolved using chiropractic adjustments. This treatment realigns the musculoskeletal system, which moves the muscle tissue off of the sciatic nerve. In addition, a chiropractor will be able to improve circulation and blood flow through the area of the sciatic nerve, which aids in natural pain relief and healing.
