Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJD or TMD) is an umbrella term covering acute (trauma related) or chronic inflammation of the temporomandibular joint which connects the mandible (jaw) to the skull. The disorder and resultant dysfunction can result in significant pain and impairment. Since this condition is often treated under more than one discipline (particularly dentistry and neurology), there are a variety of treatment approaches available.
